Post-Holiday Math Quiz

Well, folks it's time for yet another brain teaser. Here's your question:

You were 24 years old when your daughter was born, and a few years later you had a son. Now, your age is presently twice your daughter's age and you are three times your son's age. How old were you when your son was born?

Bonus questions: How old will you be when your age equals the combined ages of your children? What is the approximate surface temperature of the sun?

Good luck, and have fun!

Sorry for the delay folks, but Beo wins this week with his (first) answer of 32.

    Here’s the solution:

If you were 24 when your daughter was born, then at age 48, you are twice her age. If at 48, you are 3 times your son’s age, he must be 16. Therefore, he was born 8 years after your daughter, or when you were 32.

If you were 36 when your son was born, then he would be 12 years younger than your daughter. Then, at your age of 48, he would be 12 or 1/4 your age, which doesn't fit the question.

For the bonus questions, when you are 54, your daughter would be 30 and your son would be 24, thus adding up to 54. Yes, the surface temperature of the sun is about 6000 C, so Beo wins and additional poking of MooCow for this answer.

    Thanks for playing!
